What is dog grooming?

Beagle grooming includes regular care procedures for the dog's coat, skin, nails, ears, and teeth. Beagles have short hair that sheds easily, so their grooming involves certain specific tasks. Grooming is an important part of caring for a beagle, ensuring the health, comfort, and good appearance of your pet.

Types of grooming:

  • Hygienic grooming (includes basic procedures that ensure the dog's hygiene and health)
  • Cosmetic grooming (aimed at improving the dog's appearance)
  • Exhibition grooming (preparing a dog for shows, involving special care according to breed standards)
  • Creative grooming (a unique type of grooming that includes unconventional and artistic approaches to dog coat care)
  • Seasonal grooming (takes into account changes in grooming needs depending on the time of year)

What does beagle grooming include:

  • Brushing the coat
  • Bathing
  • Cleaning the ears
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Eye care
  • Hair trimming (what, why, and when - explained below)

What first in grooming?

The grooming process consists of logically connected steps that ensure effective and comprehensive care for your dog. For example, dirt and sand can damage the blades of clippers or other tools. Brushing your dog before bathing is also a very important step in grooming for several reasons: if the dog’s coat is tangled or matted, water can make these areas even tighter and harder to comb after washing; brushed fur allows the shampoo to spread evenly across the coat and skin, ensuring more effective cleaning; without prior brushing, some areas may remain dirty or insufficiently cleaned; brushing removes dead hairs that could otherwise fall out during washing, reducing the amount of hair clogging drains and lowering the amount of fur in the water and bathtub.

Main steps of beagle grooming:

  • Preparation of tools and materials
  • Preparation of the grooming area
  • Brushing the coat
  • Bathing
  • Drying
  • Combing
  • Trimming
  • Ear cleaning
  • Nail trimming
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Eye cleaning

What is a furminator?

A furminator is a brand of specialized grooming tools designed for dogs and cats, intended to effectively remove dead hair, undercoat, and reduce shedding. Furminators typically feature a unique design with ribbed blades that help remove excess fur without damaging the healthy hairs or the animal's skin.

Key features of furminators:

  • Effective removal of dead hair: the ribbed blades of the Furminator penetrate deep into the coat to remove dead hairs, undercoat, and loose fur that can be particularly difficult to remove with regular brushes or combs.
  • Reduction of shedding: regular use of the Furminator helps reduce the amount of shedding by removing dead hairs that could contribute to excessive shedding.
  • Support for skin and coat health: the Furminator improves blood circulation in the skin, smooths the undercoat, and sheds fur, which reduces the risk of matting and promotes healthy coat growth.

Dog grooming scissors

Generally, there is no need to trim beagles, as their healthy coat naturally looks great. Beagles are short-haired dogs with a well-fitting coat that doesn't require special maintenance. The focus here is more on achieving a refined appearance. We use scissors to round off and highlight existing lines. For this, straight or curved scissors, as well as thinning shears, are suitable.

Types of grooming scissors:

  • Straight scissors: the most versatile, suitable for general trimming, shaping contours, and detailing
  • Thinning shears (texturizing scissors): Used for thinning the coat and creating smooth transitions between different hair lengths
  • Curved scissors: Help trim complex areas, such as paws, face, and other spots with curved lines
  • Safety scissors (with blunt tips): Designed for trimming around sensitive areas, such as the eyes, nose, and paws, to avoid accidental cuts

What is a nail clipper used for?

A nail clipper (or nail trimmer) is a tool used for trimming the nails of dogs (and other pets). Regular nail trimming is an important part of dog care for several reasons.

Uses:

  • Prevention of pain and discomfort: too-long nails can cause discomfort or pain for the dog while walking. They can alter the position of the paw, leading to abnormal gait or even joint pain.
  • Protection from injuries: long nails can snag on various objects and break, which can be very painful for the dog and may require medical attention.
  • Protection of furniture and floors: shorter nails are less likely to damage flooring, furniture, and other household items.
  • Prevention of Infections: long nails can trap dirt and bacteria, which can lead to infections, especially if the nail is damaged.

Grooming table

A grooming table is an important tool for caring for dogs and other pets. Its primary purpose is to provide convenience and safety during grooming procedures, such as coat trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, bathing, and drying. Here are several key reasons why a grooming table is useful:

Grooming table is:

  • Comfort for the groomer: the grooming table raises the dog to a comfortable height, allowing the groomer to work while standing and avoiding bending over. This reduces physical strain and helps prevent back and neck pain.
  • Comfort and safety for the dog: the grooming table's special surface prevents the dog from slipping. Most tables are equipped with straps or loops to secure the dog in place, preventing falls and sudden movements during grooming.
  • Organization of the workspace: the grooming table provides an organized and clean working area. It allows for all necessary tools to be kept within reach, speeding up the grooming process.
  • Ease of grooming procedures: it is easier to perform various grooming tasks, such as trimming the coat, on the table.

Vacuum pet grooming kit

This is more about the owner's comfort than an absolute necessity for the pet. A vacuum pet grooming kit combines grooming and cleaning functions. Overall, it's one of those items we would buy again. Almost all the fur collected during grooming procedures is vacuumed into a reservoir. It saves time spent on cleaning up the space after grooming sessions.

Main functions of a vacuum pet grooming kit

  • Hair removal: special attachments allow for effective removal of shedding fur from pets, reducing the amount of fur on furniture, clothing, and floors.
  • Cleaning: vacuum kits often include attachments for cleaning fur from furniture, carpets, and floors, making them versatile for home care.

Nail grinder

A nail grinder for dogs is an electric tool designed for smoothing and trimming nails. Using a grinder instead of traditional nail clippers can be less stressful for the pet and more precise. We often combine the use of both clippers and a grinder in our grooming routine.

  • Reduced risk of injury: a grinder allows for gradual removal of the nail layer, decreasing the risk of accidentally cutting into the blood vessels (quick), which can happen with nail clippers.
  • Smooth edges: after using a grinder, the nails are left smooth, reducing the risk of snagging and damaging furniture or clothing.
  • Comfort for the pet: some dogs experience less stress with a grinder, as it doesn’t produce the sharp movements and noises that can be associated with nail clippers.
